How do Inkrebel's Genipa semi-permanent tattoos work?
Genipa semi-permanent tattoos are a natural alternative to classic temporary tattoos. The color comes from the Genipa Americana fruit (sometimes called Jagua), which grows in tropical areas of South America – especially in rainforest areas in places like Brazil, Peru and Colombia.
How does it react with the skin – and why?
When Genipa gel is applied to the skin, genipin is absorbed into the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis). There, the substance reacts with amino acids in the skin's keratin proteins through a natural chemical process. This causes the color to:
- Develops under the skin , not on top.
- Looks like a real tattoo
- Follows the skin's natural renewal process
Immediately after application, the tattoo is barely visible. After approximately 12–36 hours , the design has developed to its final dark blue/black tone.
What is Genipa and where does it grow?
Genipa is a flowering plant whose fruit contains a colorless substance ( genipin ). Native peoples of the Amazon have used the fruit's juice for body painting for hundreds of years, as it reacts with the skin to create a dark blue-black color that resembles a real tattoo.
Application & durability
- Easily applied with water (just like a classic temporary tattoo)
- Develops gradually over 12–36 hours
- Lasts up to 2 weeks , depending on skin type and location
- Disappears as the skin exfoliates naturally

How do classic temporary tattoos work?
Classic temporary tattoos work in a completely different way. They consist of a printed layer of ink that:
- Applied on top of the skin
- Transferred with water via a transfer film
- Temporarily adheres to the skin's surface using a skin-friendly adhesive
The result is visible immediately upon application and often has a more glossy finish because the color is not absorbed into the skin.
Sustainability
- Usually lasts 2–5 days
- Worn out by washing, sweat and friction
Allergy & safety
As with all skin products, allergic reactions may occur, especially in people with very sensitive skin or known allergies to natural fruit extracts.
- We always recommend doing a patch test before use.
- Do not apply to irritated or damaged skin.
- Discontinue use if redness or itching occurs.
Increbel's semi-permanent tattoos are tested and approved according to current cosmetic regulations.
